My Morning Skincare Routine

I’ve received a couple of inquiries asking about what products I’m currently using. So here they are (along with some reasons why I use them):

Cleanser: make p:rem pH 5.5 low-irritant foam cleanser. I’m testing this one and love it so far! Review forthcoming. My review is posted here.

Acidic Toner/exfoliator: Biologique Recherche Lotion P50W. It has a pH of 3.0 , my review is here. I always order it from Vicki Morav, they have wonderful customer service and always provide generous samples.

Essence: Hanskin Hyaluron Skin Essence, pH of 5.5. This is a great hydrating essence with hyaluronic acid. It has hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid which I believe is a low molecular weight which means it will penetrate rather than just sitting on top of the skin. [Note: You can also buy this from Soko Glam. New customers, use my referral link and receive 20% off $25.]

Serum: Skin inc custom blended serum, pH of 5.0-5.5. The one I use has ceramides and amino acids (building blocks of peptides). I also sometimes add in hyaluronic acid.

Vitamin C Serum: Drunk Elephant C-Firma Day Serum, pH of 3.3-3.5. I like this a lot but think it might be too heavy for me to use in the warmer, summer months. Please see my review of it and other Vitamin C serums. [Update Nov 2018: I’ve gone back to using Cosmetic Skin Solutions Vitamin C+E (pH of 3.5) because it is a dupe of Skinceuticals.]

I haven’t tested the pH levels of any creams that I use but in case anyone is interested, they are:

Eye Cream: Skinmedica TNS Eye Repair. This is expensive and totally worth it. I’m on my fourth or fifth jar. I also recommended it to my sister-in-law and she likes it so much that she is recommending it to friends.

(I forgot to include the SPF eye cream I use in the photo: Origins A Perfect World SPF 20 Age-Defense Eye Cream. I layer this over the Skinmedica TNS Eye Repair in the mornings. It is a low SPF but better than nothing and the only one I’ve found that doesn’t pill and doesn’t sting my eyes.)

Day Cream: I’m from Honey Cream. I love that it is silicone free! It is very moisturizing and some folks might find it too heavy except during the cold winter months. A little goes a long way. It works well under the many sunscreens I’ve tried and doesn’t pill. I always order it from Amazon and it seems like the real deal. Unfortunately, the amazon price fluctuates. I just ordered it for $32 and see it is less now.

Neck Cream: DHC CoQ10 Neck Cream. I recently switched to using this one because the neck cream I was using didn’t include retinol as an ingredient. I started using a neck cream a few years ago because my neck is really sensitive.  If any of my face creams found their way onto my neck, it would become irritated.

Sunscreen: I’m currently using, Murad City Skin Age Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 50 PA++++. Over the past 6-8 months, I’ve tried 8 sunscreens so that I could write a review comparing them. I decided that Murad and make p:rem’s blue ray cream are my favorites. Now, I’m trying to figure out which of the two I like better.

In my next post, I’ll write about my PM routine…same cleanser/toner but different serums. You can find that post, here.

Hi Norma, I use both curology and drunk elephant after P50. I think drunk elephant says to use their C-firma first, before any other serums but I don’t. I put it on last because it is kinda thick in texture and it has oil in it. I’m afraid the other serums might not penetrate it. In the evenings, I used to use P50 and then wait 15 minutes and then use curology, other serums, and moisturizer. But after consulting with them (and other sites), I now use P50, all my serums, and moisturizer and wait 15 minutes. Then, I apply curology on top. I was afraid that the curology wouldn’t penetrate my moisturizer but it is pretty strong stuff so I guess there is no need to worry.

Okay there seems to be 2 schools of thought regarding “creamy/heavier” actives. Either they go after a pH toner and before serums/essences or they go after the serums/essences. Right now I’m doing the former but even a recent article from last year with SkinAndTonics shows that she uses her curology prescription post serums/essences like you. My active is a prescription Tretinoin at 0.05%. Quite frankly your approach makes for sense.
